Although this season of life has meant less dates than before, my husband and I still find ways to date each other even if it means bringing little Addie Rose along with us. Our weekend began with him surprising me Friday evening with a beautiful bouquet of flowers just because. He also rented two movies he thought I would like (okay, maybe I’ll admit they were chick flicks).
We started Saturday out with a trip to Whole Foods to pick up some cold brew coffee. He chose locally brewed Cuvee and I chose Stumptown.
We brought along our Bibles so we could read in the store’s seating area on the top level.
I also brought along Ikea’s newest catalog #becauseikea
After sipping our coffee, we headed over to Sam’s Club where we are now members (more on that later!). We went to pick up our groceries which I had ordered online the day prior and were ready in the store when we arrived. We also picked up two take and bake pizzas for the students in our small group.
Derek and I lead the student small group at our church for junior high and high school students and we had planned a 90’s movie night for them at our house. We decided to show them Brink! which we consider a classic from back in our day. The plan was to FaceTime our friend Patrick after the movie so he could share his testimony with the students. Patrick was a main character in the movie – he is a Christian and actually the worship pastor at our church back in California. As the Lord would have it, one of our elders and his wife at our church here in Austin actually performed Patrick and his wife’s premarital counseling. The world is not so small after all!
We prepared for the movie night by cleaning our little one bedroom apartment. Our dishwasher had been out of commission since Friday evening so we had to go old school and wash the dishes by hand.
We were all tided up and ready for the students to arrive and it was almost like Pat Hutchins book, The Doorbell Rang, came alive in our home! We were expecting at least three students from our church to show up and were informed that there was a slew of Chinese foreign exchange students arriving in Austin who would be joining us as their host families attend our church. God graciously brought 11 Chinese students into our home that night for a total of 14 students who were able to hear the good news of the Gospel through our friend sharing his testimony. I still don’t have a final count of how many foreign exchange students we will have with us this semester as the number has continued to grow. Praise God for bringing us to Austin and allowing us to make disciples of all nations within our own home!
Sunday was a sweet time of fellowship with our church family in the morning and then lunch at Smashburger. We headed home for naps which ended up happening only for Addie. Derek had rented The Intern from Redbox and it was due back that evening so we decided to watch it. For a modern movie, it was surprisingly well done.
We ended our weekend with smiles from our favorite four month old and Season 9 of Duck Dynasty, a family favorite. I like to say we work hard so we can play hard and I suppose we accomplished that.
