Things Didn’t Go As Planned

The weekend of October 8th I was planning on attending the Silobration at Magnolia Market in Waco. It had been on our family calendar for months and I was counting down the days until its arrival. I was really bummed when my husband told me on Wednesday that he would be working on Saturday and we wouldn’t be able to go. I thought maybe Addie and I could make the trek up there ourselves but knew that without my husband’s help, driving an hour and a half one way with a 6 month old would be more trouble than it is worth – especially since our last visit didn’t quite go as planned.

Derek encouraged me to ask some other ladies if they were available to go but I HATE doing anything last minute so I elected to forego the Silobration. I was really disappointed but decided to let it go and move on. Friday my husband stayed home from work sick and he blessed me beyond belief when he offered to watch Addie so I could go shopping by myself.

Because things didn’t go as planned, I was able to go out alone for 3 hours!

I honestly can’t tell y’all the last time that happened. I hit up Ikea, Hobby Lobby, and Sam’s Club because #mommadontplay. At Ikea, which I call Disneyland for Grown Ups, I was able to purchase everything on my list and more (hello, “As Is” aisle). Since I couldn’t go to Fixer Upper, I decided to play Fixer Upper.

After Ikea, I stopped in at Hobby Lobby to gather some supplies for a friend’s bridal shower and found this wood sign at 50% off so of course, it found its way into my cart as items tend to do at Hobby Lobby. I also bought a white canvas ampersand on clearance to hang on our wall. I laughed when I brought it home to my husband and he asked me, “What’s the and sign for?”

Sam’s was right next door to Hobby Lobby so I went to grab some groceries before heading home. I started to feel a bit under the weather while shopping, but I don’t get to go out alone too often so I ignored it.

Saturday morning, Derek headed to work and I headed to a local children’s consignment sale because it was the last day of the sale and most items were being discounted by 50%! I wasn’t sure what to expect because I had never been to a consignment sale but one of my friends had attended earlier in the week and told me it would be worthwhile. I was a bit overwhelmed upon entering the athletic center where the sale was being hosted so I decided to start with the books.

If you know me, you know I LOVE books, really LOVE books. If I had a dream home, it would include a library like the one Belle has in Beauty & The Beast. Growing up, I was the nerd who would borrow her mom’s library card to work around the 15 book per card limit. So, once I saw that there were hundreds of children’s books at the sale, I knew I had to take advantage.

don't go as planned

I have really been interested in minimalistic living and don’t want to have a home full of toys – I’m strongly opposed to my time in this life being used in managing stuff. I prefer that it be invested in doing things that matter. To me, reading matters. I hope to instill a passion for reading in my children so that one day, Lord willing, they will be passionate about reading His Word.

This being the case, I took my time browsing the book section and was excited to find books by my favorite children’s illustrator/author, Barbara Cooney, Madeline books, vintage Golden Books, and a set of 6 Amelia Bedelia books for $3. I was so excited when I found Once Upon A Potty girl edition for $1 that I said, “YES!” out loud. I found The Foot Book which I found hilarious as a child (“Here come pig feet” anyone?), Sam & Dave Dig A Hole (I just saw Read Aloud Revival post about this on Instagram so I was super stoked to find it), Pancakes for Breakfast by Tomie de Paola (Read Aloud Revival also posted about this author) and a few others.

I eventually decided I had to walk away from the books to see if there were items I could purchase for Addie that would be more pertinent to the stage of life she’s in.

don't go as planned

I was thrilled to find a gently used pink Bumbo seat for $7.50 as they typically cost about $30. I also found a portable high chair brand new for $15, and a boppy cover for $2. Since the weather is flirting with colder temperatures here in ATX, my husband wanted me to look for some warm clothes for Addie. I was able to find multiple clothing items for her ranging from $0.75-$2.25 each. I had budgeted $58 for this sale and it didn’t take long to meet my budget.

Because things didn’t go as planned, I was able to look well after the ways of my household.

Honestly, last weekend didn’t go as planned but it turned out even better than I expected and I am thankful for God and His goodness and faithfulness in my life. In this season, most of which was never in my plan (i.e. marriage, moving and motherhood all within a year), I have experienced God’s love for me as He’s caused me to become like His Son. It hasn’t been easy by far but it has been sweet to know He is at work in me to will and to work for His good pleasure.

Because things didn’t go as planned, I was able to feed on His faithfulness.
