On Bended Knee is the latest Bible study by author Crickett Keeth and it is designed to help women study the topic of prayer. I’ve tended to study the Bible more by book rather than by topic but this is a topical study that’s done really well. On Bended Knee has me excited to grow in prayer according to the patterns established in the Bible. One aspect of this study that really encouraged my heart is that Crickett begins the study by looking at how Jesus prayed. She uses the Lord’s Prayer from the Sermon on the Mount as a model of how we as believers ought to pray.
She begins this section by asking a series of compelling questions: “Are you satisfied with your prayer life? Does time alone with God in prayer hold the highest priority in your day, or does it get pushed aside by the urgent? Are you just saying words or are you pouring out your heart to the Father? What is most of your prayer time focused on – asking for personal needs, worshiping God, giving thanks? Prayer is more than just asking God for things; it’s about the relationship,” (pg. 13). What stood out to me when I read this is how it is so different from most Christian books on the topic of prayer. It seems that many books in this genre focus on what we can get from God rather than praying for the sake of growing in our love for Him.
