Memorizing Scripture is the latest book by pastor’s wife, mother, and author Glenna Marshall. In this brief book, Glenna provides readers with practical methods of Scripture memorization and helps them understand why it matters. While it can be tempting to memorize the Bible with wrong motives, Glenna paints a compelling picture of why it’s important to memorize with the right ones.
Some of the methods she shared were some I was familiar with but I was really excited that she included some that are newer to me. I was aware of The First Letter Method but began actually practicing it and it’s been very helpful. I had never heard of The Shower Method so I purchased some waterproof sticky notes from Amazon to give it a try. One of the aspects of this book I really appreciated is that Glenna is very encouraging. Scripture memorization can feel daunting but she reminds readers that it is possible.
I appreciated the second to last chapter of the book which focused on rightly handling God’s word specifically with sufferers. Through various trials, I’ve become aware that although people have the right intentions as they seek to offer comfort they can still use Scripture wrongly. Glenna articulates why we do this but also reminds us that we don’t have to because a significant part of Scripture memorization is that we gain a better understanding of a verse’s context and we grow in using God’s word rightly.
This book is so encouraging and it is easily one of my favorite books and must read for all Christians.
