For this week’s Magnolia My Way post, I thought it would be fun to feature an item that’s especially popular right now – chalkboards. If you’ve spent any time at a craft store recently, you’ve probably seen a plethora of these around in all shapes and sizes. I noticed that Magnolia Market has a cute hanging chalkboard on sale for $10.50 (the original price is $15). Even though $10.50 may not seem like much, I thought it was a bit high for a small chalkboard – especially since I’ve seen similar items go for under $5 at major craft stores.
One of the best chalkboards I’ve found so far is from DollarTree.
It’s not a slate style chalkboard but this is a good thing because it’s much easier to clean.
When I wanted to change the message on my chalkboard, I just clean it with a baby wipe and it’s good to go!
To make my chalkboard look like the one Magnolia is selling, I purchased a wood shadow box from Hobby Lobby, detached the frame and knocked out the glass. (If you go this route, I highly recommend wearing gloves and protective goggles.)
Once my frame was ready, I used a hot glue gun and glue sticks from the 99 Cent Store to attach the chalkboard and the jute rope (which I already had on hand from this project).

- Chalk marker
- Paint/stain (optional)
- Baby wipes (optional)
Out of pocket, I paid about $7 for my hanging chalkboard (considering I already owned the rope).
I really like how it turned out and I’ve been looking to my hand lettering book for inspiration on how to style the messages I write.
My hanging chalkboard is the perfect addition to my Texas/Southern themed gallery wall.
I made the wall as a tangible way to fulfill the command to, “feed on (God’s) faithfulness,” in Psalm 37:3.
My husband and I went through a lot of growth while in Texas and I don’t want to forget how faithful God was to us in that season and I constantly need to be reminded that His character hasn’t changed. In times like these, the gallery reminds me to pray for those in Houston – not only for salvation from the storm but for salvation of souls.
I’m praying ultimately that God will be glorified and His name will be made great.
