Just Show Up is the latest book by book editor and author Drew Dyck and it’s about one of my favorite subjects—ordinary faithfulness. Dyck begins the book by sharing about his dad who became a pastor despite academic difficulties by simply showing up. What is showing up? According to Dyck, “Often it requires that you are physically present, like my dad turning up for class. But it’s bigger than that. It’s about moving through your life with a commitment to attend to the most important things. And it requires action. It means being willing to take that first scary step toward what you feel God is calling you do to. And then do it again,” (pg. 22).
The rest of Just Show Up contains practical ways for readers to live up to the book’s title. Over time showing up has become a value of lesser importance making the overall message of the book both necessary and timely. I appreciated the encouragement to develop habits of faithfully consuming the Bible and praying. How Dyck encourages readers to cultivate these habits isn’t condemning but comforting because he presents actionable steps that can be easily implemented and reminds readers that we practice just showing up not to be made right with God but because we’ve been made right with God through Jesus.
The book also has an entire chapter dedicated to church attendance and if you’re a parent of young children, you will probably laugh and relate wholeheartedly to the detailed description of what it takes to get his family to church (I know I did!). If you are a Christian who could use some encouragement when it comes to becoming more like Jesus, particularly in the area of faithfulness, you’ll enjoy and be encouraged by Just Show Up. This book’s combination of humor and wisdom made it a delightful read and I eagerly anticipate reading more from Drew in the future.
