It’s hard to believe that September is already here and close to being halfway over. Just days away from fall, our September book basket is full of books about fall! Fall is my favorite season and I’m excited to read about it with my kids.
My book list also includes one title about the events of September 11th in an effort to help children understand the historical tragedy that many of us lived through. 1. Acorn Was A Little Wild
This silly story is about an acorn who likes adventure and taking risks. He is the first to leave his tree and ends up buried by a squirrel and becomes an oak tree that encourages other acorns to live on the wild side.
2. Apples, Apples Everywhere!
This book teaches children about apples and what it looks like to harvest them on an apple farm. You can read it for free as an ebook on Hoopla.
3. Apples
I’ve enjoyed using Gail Gibbons’ books for teaching my children science and history. This book does say that apples have been in existence for two million years which is not something I support but it is still a fun and interesting read nonetheless. This book is available as both an audiobook and ebook on Hoopla.
4. Autumn is for Apple Pie
I recently learned that this book is out of print which made me so sad because it’s a sweet one! The Tales of Buttercup Grove series reminds me of Frog and Toad. This volume in particular is about animal friends working together to bake an apple pie.
5. Autumn Leaves
Autumn Leaves is a neat primer on leaves. It includes various facts about leaves as well as photos of them and briefly introduces the concept of photosynthesis.
6. Autumn Story
I’ve seen Brambly Hedge book shared frequently on Instagram and since our library doesn’t have this one, I decided to buy it. This book tells the tale of Primrose, a mouse who becomes lost and then reunites with her family. The book was written in 1980 and I love the vintage feel of the illustrations.
7. Because of An Acorn
This book contains lovely illustrations and highlights the impact that oak trees have on nature. Because of An Acorn is available as an ebook on Hoopla.
8. Eric Says Please
We received the Eric Says series years ago when we won a set of books from The Good Book Company (they ran a photo contest – you can see my winning photo here). In this book, Eric is determined to do things independently and learns that a little humility goes a long way. I love and highly recommend this whole series as it teaches children truths about God in very relatable ways.
9. Fall Parade
Using lovely illustrations, Fall Parade celebrates the seasonal changes that occur in nature this time of year. This book is a newer release and we enjoyed it as an ebook via Hoopla.
10. Free Fall
This wordless picture book is about a boy who falls asleep reading and enjoys various adventures in his dreams.
11. In the Middle of Fall
We’ve enjoyed Kevin Henkes’ children’s books and this title is no exception. This book uses lovely illustrations to encourage children to enjoy the season of fall.
12. It’s Fall
We borrowed this book from our library and I’m so glad we did! This is a dedication to all things fall told in rhyme.
13. Johnny
We received this book as a hand me down and it’s a simple retelling of the life and legacy of John Chapman who is commonly referred to as Johnny Appleseed.
14. Johnny Appleseed
I found this book at a thrift store and appreciate how it helps children learn true facts about Johnny Appleseed.
15. Leaf Man
I enjoy Lois Ehlert’s picture books for her artistic creativity making Leaf Man an obvious choice for our September book basket! The page layout in this book is really unique as the tops of the pages form a landscape. The illustrations are also unique as they consist of objects made out of leaves.
16. Leaves, Leaves, Leaves
This sweet book finds a mother bear and her son taking a fall walk. They examine leaves and the mother teaches her son about leaves and how they grow.
17. Oak Leaf
Using lovely illustrations, this book is about an oak leaf’s departure from its tree and its flight to the ground.
18. Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf
This book is about a maple tree and how it came to be planted at the home of the story’s narrator. The illustrations are captivating as they feature mixed media and the book concludes with facts about maple trees.
19. Soup Day
We learned about this title upon seeing on the back of Pizza Day, another favorite children’s book of ours. Since fall is considered soup season, this seemed like a perfect pick for our September book basket. This book is about a girl and her mom working together to make vegetable soup.
20. Strega Nona’s Harvest
In this silly story, Strega Nona seeks to have the most bountiful harvest. Her grandson, Big Anthony, takes a few seeds from her supply without her knowing and has a bounty of his own that is shared in the community.
21. Summer Green to Autumn Gold
This book explains how leaves get and change their color. I love the illustrations in this one and appreciate how it simply introduces science to young readers. We borrowed this book as an ebook via Libby.
22. Ten Apples Up On Top
I really enjoyed this book as a kid and was thrilled to recently purchase a thrifted copy. In this story, animals work hard to balance ten apples on top of their heads.
23. The Apple Pie Tree
This lovely book is about a girl whose family grows an apple tree. They then use the apples to make an apple pie. I love the illustrations in this one. We read it free via Hoopla.
24. The Leaf Thief
This silly story is about a squirrel who grows concerned when he believes that some of his leaves have been stolen. I like the modern illustrations in this one. We read it as an ebook via Hoopla.
25. This Very Tree
This book is based on the true story of The Survivor Tree, a Callery pear tree that was damaged during the September 11th terrorist attacks. The tree was then removed and tended to away from the ruins of the twin towers and it survived and is now flourishing. We read this book on September 11th and it is a great, inspiring read for September.
