Last Saturday we headed out to visit Round Top, TX to check out the famous antiques fair in the Big Red Barn Events Center. Our trip was one of the many sweet ways my husband blessed me for my birthday this year. I don’t remember how I initially came across the fair but since I discovered that it’s an event that Joanna Gaines frequents, I’ve been wanting to check it out. Having never attended an antiques fair, we weren’t quite sure what to expect. Admission was relatively cheap which I was thankful for because attending with our kids proved quite challenging. Overall, their behavior was great. It’s just stressful to have young kids with you while you’re checking out valuable highly-priced items! We did a quick stroll around the Big Red Barn Event Center to see what each of the vendors had for sale. I was able to quickly snap some photos but each time we paused to look at items, I felt like we were in the way of other shoppers as it was pretty crowded. Since it took us about an hour and a half to get to Round Top from our home in Round Rock, we decided it would be worth our while to explore the town and I’m so glad we did!
Our first stop was Royer’s Round Top Cafe which is well known for its pies. The restaurant is small and was very crowded due to folks being in town for the fair so we ordered some pie to go. We opted for the Texas Trash which was rich and delicious and the Lemon Blueberry which was a wonderful blend of tart and sweet. (If you’d like to try them yourself and visiting Round Top isn’t an option, you can have one shipped to you!) Near Royer’s we spotted Henkel Square where we ended spending most of our visit. The girls loved playing in the fountain and running wild and free.
In the square is an adorable restaurant called Local Roots. Derek and I ate lunch there and Derek purchased a pecan cheesecake bar for us all to share. He said it is his favorite dessert and he almost went back for two more before we headed home (I guess another trip to Round Top is in our future!).
After lunch, we decided to check out the chapel in the square. I just absolutely adored everything about the exterior and asked Derek to take some photos of the girls and me. One of the biggest complaints that I hear from family when I send photos is that I’m not in any of them. I hoped to remedy that by handing the camera over to Derek even though he doesn’t have much experience with it. While he did get some decent shots I was super bummed that my hair was so frizzy even though I had straightened it that morning. But I supposed after living in Texas for a few years now, I should have known better.
Inside the town chapel, there was a very friendly, kind, and helpful lady who informed me that the chapel was now a visitor center. She saw that I had my camera and pointed me to some spots in Round Top that would be great for photography. Since it was getting close to Ava’s nap time, I decided to pick one of the spots as our final stop. My choice, naturally, was the town library which is located in an old church! A piece of heaven on earth, if you ask me. The library was super dreamy as it had a garden, fountain, and playground (or playscape as they call them here) across the street. The girls loved playing and running around and although the library was closed, I loved walking around taking pictures. Admittedly, our trip didn’t start out meeting my expectations but we ended up having a great visit and we can’t wait to return, Lord willing, in the spring.
