Sunflower Summer
In Sunflower Summer, author Wendy Dunham uses cute animal friends to teach children the value of friendship and working together. I appreciate that this book also incorporated concepts including math and science. Sunflower Summer is split up into small chapters which are the perfect length for young children who are making the transition from reading picture books to reading chapter books.
My favorite aspect of Sunflower Summer is that it ends with Romans 8:25, a verse about Christians longing for the return of Christ. This verse states, “But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience,” (ESV). I’m thankful that Wendy included this verse because it parallels the main character Raccoon and his friends having to wait with patience for sunflowers to grow. Patience is a Christian virtue listed as the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22 so I am thankful for it’s inclusion in Sunflower Summer as it creates a catalyst for me to talk Biblically with my daughter about the concept.
A Windy Spring Day
A Windy Spring Day is the second book in the Tales of Buttercup Grove series by Wendy Dunham. This book focuses on Skunk who is home alone on a very windy day. The wind leaves him feeling afraid so he calls his friend Raccoon who comes to comfort him. When Raccoon arrives he has a fun surprise for Skunk that they invite all their friends to share in.
This book concludes with the verse Psalm 56:3 which is one of my favorite verses. Psalm 56:3 states, “When I am afraid,I put my trust in you,” (ESV). I love that this verse is so simple, even my daughter can memorize it. I love too that this verse points to God who is faithful and worthy of our trust. I really enjoyed A Windy Spring Day and look forward to reading the rest of the books in the Tales of Buttercup Grove series.
I received Sunflower Summer and A Windy Spring Day compliments of Harvest House Publishers in exchange for my honest review.
