DIY Lip Balm

DIY lip balm is easier to make than you might think. Maybe it’s the old soul in me, but I’m a firm believer in the concept of not buying something if you can make it yourself. In this day and age where convenience is a hot commodity, I actually find it fun to learn how to make things that I use on a regular basis. One item that is essential in our household is lip balm. It might seem silly, but my lips are constantly chapped and it’s really uncomfortable. For a while, I was purchasing Dr. Bronner’s chapstick because I liked that it went on smooth versus waxy but then I found out Dr. B’s supports marijuana legalization and contribute $600,000 toward the cause – not something I want to support by any means. I had used Burt’s Bees in the past and although it wasn’t my first choice, I decided I would switch back. However, when I saw that Katie, the Wellness Mama, posted her own recipe for making homemade lip balm, I knew I had to give it a go!

My recipe is adapted from hers to fit the needs of my family and I tweaked it a bit to make it simpler for myself. I also purchased ingredients from different companies than she did and was highly pleased with the results.

DIY Lip Balm Recipe

Time: 15-20 minutes

Yield: 20 lip balms

Directions

  1. Fill a saucepan with about an inch of water and place it on the stove on medium heat.
  2. Place a 16 oz mason jar inside the pan.
  3. Add the beeswax, coconut oil and shea butter to the jar (the beeswax will take the longest to melt).
  4. Once all ingredients have melted, remove the pan from the heat and add your desired amount of peppermint essential oil drops.
  5. When the mouth of the jar is cooled, pour the mixture into the lip balm tubes (be careful as the contents is hot and the jar is too – I held my tubes over another mason jar as I poured just in case).
  6. Once you see the mixture begin to solidify in the tubes, place the lid on.
  7. Store the lip balm in your fridge for 1-2 hours.
  8. Enjoy!

The cost of the items (not including shipping, tax, etc.) comes out to $38.46, divided by 50 it equals $.77/tube. To me, this was an excellent price compared to Burt’s Bees which retails for about $2.50-$3.00/tube and all of the ingredients I used are organic! I also have enough ingredients left to make more lip balm – I just need to order more tubes!

I was inspired to try this recipe after my friend Courtney had made some homemade lip balm and gifted one to me for Christmas. It was my favorite lip balm and I decided to make some for my little family. I’ve ordered some cocoa butter (Aura Cacia brand) to use in place of the peppermint essential oil and am planning on using 4 tablespoons with the above recipe #becausechocolate.

  • Thank you for this post! I saved the recipe for the original S.W. Basics lip balm, but I haven’t tried making it yet. It contains cocoa butter instead of shea butter. Now I’m not sure which recipe to try . . .

  • I tried the S.W. Basics recipe (1 T. each of beeswax pellets, cocoa butter, and coconut oil, + several drops of essential oil), and I’m thinking of trying a recipe with shea butter next time. Did you have to soften your shea butter before measuring? Does shea butter have a fragrance?

My DIY projects rarely save me money. I bought a bottle of Aura Cacia peppermint oil, and I wouldn’t have been able to tell that it was peppermint if you blindfolded me. So I bought a second bottle from a different company. Fortunately, I found beeswax pellets in the bulk bins at a health food store.

    • Oh wow, I have never heard of S.W. Basics but I’ve been excited to learn about the company as a result of your comment. Thank you! I just saw too that their founder wrote a book so I went ahead and added it to my ever growing Amazon list. My shea butter was really soft so I didn’t have to do anything prior to measuring it and there was no fragrance. I had to wait a bit for the beeswax to melt but I bought a stick of it rather than pellets so that’s probably why. I can’t recall whether or not we’ve used Aura Cacia’s peppermint oil but I saw that NOW Peppermint Oil is $4.95 from LuckyVitamin.com for a 1oz bottle and it has great reviews (I’m pretty sure I’ve used this one in the past and it worked for me). I just reordered some empty lip balm tubes and found out that you can buy a tray to hold them while you fill them up so I got one those too and found good prices at BulkApothecary.com. I’m not sure what the regular price of beeswax is but both of these sites, as well as Mountain Rose, seemed reasonable to me. 🙂
