Austin Aquarium Trip

To kick off the long weekend, we took a family trip to the Austin Aquarium. This was actually my second time visiting the aquarium. I first went when were new to Austin and I was working for the school district. While it was fun to check it out with my students, it was also really stressful. I had the 4-6 year old group which made all of the field trips challenging. However, going with my own little family was so much fun! Ava pretty much slept the whole time but it was sweet to see Addie’s eyes grow wide in excitement as she saw all the animals. The Austin Aquarium isn’t what you might expect if, like me, you’re a California transplant but it is still a fun activity with lots for little ones to see and do. In addition to the marine life, the aquarium also has various reptiles, birds, lemurs, and kangaroos! They also have a small indoor playground for kids which Addie really enjoyed. Here are a few pictures from our first trip as a family. Addie has already asked to go back so I think another trip is in our near future! These guys were fun to see and photograph but I also felt terrified that they were kind of out in the open. They gave me Jurassic Park flashbacks.

I just love the bright colors on this starfish!
I just love her crazy curls.

I would be terrified if I ever saw this thing just walking around!
Heart eyes for days!
I’m so thankful there was a net between us.

Turtles are so cool! I especially loved seeing a mama turtle with her babies. I’ve decided that I now need a baby turtle as a pet.

This area of the aquarium is a pool with ducks and lots of koi fish. Addie really liked seeing the ducks but I think she was a little unsure about the fish.

I love her smile in the reflection. She thought each fish was Dory.

I don’t know what this is but I love how cool it looks.

This is some type of eel just larger than a worm. Derek and I were fascinated by how these guys would just pop up through the rocks and then disappear underneath them.

Addie is super into pirates because she loves the story of Peter Pan. She poked this one just to make sure he wasn’t real!

This is a pool full of rays that you can actually pet but Addie was a little too intimidated to try.

I thought the jellyfish were really neat and grew more impressed when they changed colors. I later observed that it was the light changing colors and not the fish. 🙂
