Sex, Purity, and the Longings of A Girl’s Heart is the third book by sisters Kristen Clark and Bethany Beal of Girl Defined Ministries. I had the
I found this to be a refreshing read in its genre because the sisters aren’t making it appear as though they are perfect. It seems that similar books on these topics often come across as self righteous and as such are unappealing. I appreciate too that Bethany and Kristen address the fact that these are not just issues men face.
What I really appreciate is that Kristen and Bethany share that sexual sinners have hope because of Jesus. The first few pages of the book explain the Gospel message clearly. The tone Kristen and Bethany use is gentle and gracious and their words are full of encouragement. They don’t shy away from the truth of God’s word when it comes to these issues but they do handle them in a tactful and helpful manner.
If you grew up in the 90s purity culture, as many of us did, you will especially enjoy the chapter titled, Imperfect Purity. In this chapter, Kristen explains how the purity culture is often unbiblical because it encourages Christians to pursue purity for the sake of false piety rather than for God’s glory. This was a refreshing perspective to read and I appreciate Kristen and Bethany looking at sex and purity from all the angles.
I really enjoyed Sex, Purity, and the Longings of A Girl’s Heart and as a mom of two girls, I’m especially grateful for this resource. I’m excited to see how the Lord will use this book and believe that it is an excellent asset to the church.
I received Sex, Purity, and the Longings Of A Girl’s Heart compliments of Baker Books in exchange for my honest review.
