If you’ve been around here for any amount of time, it should come as no surprise that reading is my favorite pastime. I’m obsessed with all things book related and have established a good sized personal collection of books. One day I hope to turn our spare bedroom in a library. In the meantime, I’ve decided to pursue a “Read What You Own” plan for this year. I own over one hundred books I haven’t read. While this sounds kind of crazy, I had a friend point out that many of them are review copies, which made me feel a bit better about it. Last year I declared that I would participate in a similar challenge and did horribly. With our local Lifeway closing down, there were so many good deals on great books and I took advantage of it. This year, however, I’m determined to exercise self-control when it comes to book buying.
I originally thought about not letting myself buy any new books but I don’t see that as being realistic. Next week I am attending the Proclaim Truth conference which is sponsored by one of my favorite Christian publishers and features some of my favorite Christian authors so I will most likely purchase a few books (and get them signed!). We will also be staying near this adorable independent bookstore/coffee shop (Side Note – I just noticed that their website features lots of Christian resources so now I’m extra excited!). I’m not sure if I’ll end up purchasing any books from the bookstore but I will definitely make it a point to peruse.
Last year I had the privilege of participating in a local ladies book club which I enjoyed immensely. Our theme last year was strong female leads and we began with Jane Eyre which is now my favorite work of fiction (check out my Resources page for more of my favorites). I am participating in the book club again this year and hoping to obtain all the books from our local library or via ThriftBooks if necessary.
When it comes to launch teams, I will probably slow down my participation unless I come across a book with a message I strongly believe in sharing. Many launch teams are moving from providing free copies for reviewers to requiring reviewers to preorder a copy. While I’m all about supporting authors and publishers that I admire, I don’t have endless funds for book buying. With that in mind, I’m on two launch teams for books that debut this month. The first book is Master of One by Jordan Raynor which is phenomenal and has been life changing for me. I’ve also been enjoying Grieve, Create, Believe by Rachel George. Rachel is a friend of a friend with a story that is bittersweet and beautiful. Her book is so lovely and I can’t wait to share more about it.
In February, I’m looking forward to reading Worthy: Celebrating the Value of Women by Eric Schumacher and Elyse Fitzpatrick, Stop Calling Me Beautiful by Phylicia Masonheimer, and Fight Your Fears by Kristen Wetherell. I’m not sure what the rest of the year will hold but I’m anticipating reading 2-3 books per month and I’m excited for what lies ahead as I explore my own personal library.
What are you reading this year?
